Tunnels Beach Makau - Kauai Wedding Venues

Tunnels Beach (Makau Beach) has long been known as one of the best snorkeling beaches on Kauai. The Coral reef is abundant in colorful fish, shells, and even sea turtles. However it’s the beautiful view of Mount Makana of Bali Ha’i that really makes this location stand out as one of the best beach wedding locations on Kauai and what makes it our favorite on our Kauai Wedding Venues list.

Mount Makana – Bali Ha’i

Bali Ha’i is a sharp peaked mountain that is part of the Na Pali mountain range on the North Shore of Kauai. It was made famous in one of the songs of the movie South Pacific and with good reason.

This majestic mountain sitting adjacent to the ocean makes for an excellent location to check out the “Last Sunset in the United States” each night.

The verdant green mountains provide a lush tropical background for wedding pictures and make for a romantic backdrop for the wedding.

Tunnels Beach

Tunnels Beach is a white sand beach that is lined with Palms and Ironwood trees. These trees give shade for the wedding if the day is hot and also provide backdrops for wedding pictures. The water changes color from deep blues (away from the coral area) to greens from the coral visible in the shallow water.

During the winter the waves are larger making for interesting photo backdrops but they can be somewhat unpredictable. As with all beach wedding plans it is better to consult a local Wedding Planner like Diana to be sure you make your plans for the best time of year as well as the best time of day to make your wedding perfect!

Tunnels Beach Location

You will find Tunnels Beach on the North Shore of the island. Take Hwy 560 north to the top of the island. One drawback is that the parking is a little hard to come by. You access the beach by taking one of two dirt roads heading off the main highway.

There is additional parking at the end of the highway a Haena Beach Park from which you can walk back to tunnels beach or have someone ferry wedding guests from there to the wedding location. There are also bathrooms at Haena Beach and often venders selling shaved ice, drinks and other items.
