Lumahai Beach - North Shore Kauai
Lumahai Beach is a beautiful beach on the North shore of Kauai between Hanalei and Ha’ena State Park. This beach was made famous by the musical which premiered in 1940 and won a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1950. During the summer this can be a wonderful place for a beach wedding. Other times of year the surf can be unpredictable and dangerous.
The volcanic rock outcroppings on this beach is what makes this such a unique location for wedding pictures with the strong contrast between the black rock, bright blue sky and turquoise-blue water. Lumahai beach is one of the more picturesque beaches on our Kauai Wedding Venues list
More care needs to be made in the decision to choose this beach. While it is one of the more beautiful beaches on the Kauai North Shore it may not be suitable with weddings where part of the wedding party or the guests include young children. This area is known to have larger waves reach up onto the shore at times and there is a dangerous undertow and current. The wedding party should be careful not to turn their back on the surf (unless of course others are watching as in the case of our pictures).
The beach is shaped as a long-wide crescent. Lush tropical backgrounds surround the beach making for more photo opportunities. Because of the reputation for being a more dangerous beach for swimming there are usually less people on the beach making for a more secluded wedding. Trees surrounding the beach give shady locations to relax before and after the wedding.
Before choosing this location it would be good to first consult with Diana to ensure that Lumahai beach is safe during the time of your wedding. It may also be a good idea to have an alternate location chosen in case the surf is higher than expected the day of your wedding.
There is dirt parking and no other facilities. Also, there is no lifeguard posted for Lumahai beach.
